How Does CareSpark Help Patients?

1. CareSpark is convenient.

Patients typically receive health services in more than one place. For this reason, it is important for doctors to know about the services that their patients receive from other health care providers. Often, health care professionals can only share health records through methods such as mailing or faxing, which is slow and labor-intensive.

Participation in CareSpark's health information exchange enables health records to be viewed quickly and easily. Healthcare professionals who participate in CareSpark are better able to coordinate care with other authorized entities - saving time and money for both patient and doctor.

2. CareSpark increases safety.

Healthcare providers who use CareSpark to receive patient information can also receive information about the latest research and evidence-based guidelines, with reminders and alerts that offer opportunity to consider recommended clinical best practices when weighing options for treatment of their patients.

3. CareSpark protects privacy.

CareSpark's system also offers patients and clinicians the ability to monitor access of the patient's information, by automatically recording the date, time and identification information of any entity which requests, receives and views patient information, monitoring which is more reliable than that which occurs with paper records systems.

Patients have more ability to control access to their information. Although the personal information belongs to the patient, the healthcare organization which creates the record is legally responsible for access and use of the information for the purposes of treatment, payment or operations.  Healthcare organizations which participate in CareSpark must inform the patient that their information may be shared electronically, after which the patient either gives express written or verbal consent (actively enrolling in CareSpark) or by not prohibiting the provider from electronic sharing of the record (passively enrolling in CareSpark).  Patients who prefer not to have their information shared electronically through CareSpark have the right to notify their provider and disenroll from participation in CareSpark.

Patient health information is not available for view by:

  • The public

  • Doctors or other health professionals that are not authorized

While participation in CareSpark can help improve the care patients receive, participation is voluntary and patients can withdraw consent to share their records at any time. Check with your healthcare providers to see if they participate, and let them know of your desire for your records to be shared (or not).
